This Sunday I continue in my series on emotions by talking about ‘joy.’
Jesus in his farewell message to his disciples during the Passover Meal spoke about joy several times. In one instance he said, “In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." (John 16:23-24)
The one who came to bring us the abundant life wants us to experience joy in our lives. So often we equate joy with happiness (which is fleeting) or with the accumulation of material possessions.
I believe the joy that Jesus mentions goes to a much deeper level. It involves the spiritual blessings that are ours as people of faith. There is the “joy of our salvation” (Psalm 51:12) and “the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
We must be able to capture this joy that God gives. It even lasts beyond the receiving of gifts and as we count it joy when we experience trials (see James 1:2) because of it producing steadfastness. I believe in a world that is so caught up with joy that is dependent on material possessions, we need to realize the joy that comes from our relationship with Jesus.
Do you feel the emotion of joy throughout the week? If not, what might be keeping you from experiencing it?
